#HazardSpotting is a community safety initiative that helps raise awareness about dangerous workplace safety violations, developed by MySafetySign.com and supported by VISTA Training, Inc.
When it comes to commercial and residential construction, contractors often take a lot of chances with safety. That's never been more evident than on this project in the UK, where it's a miracle no one has been killed or injured. For starters, the improvised walkway from one building to another is composed of a set of boards with a sheet of wood across the top. It's not secured on either end and doesn't have any handrails. In short, it's a disaster waiting to happen. Next, the building itself has no railing for fall protection. The man in the dark jacket and pants near the center of the picture is reaching for something while standing close to the edge of the building - possibly catching something thrown by the man wearing the reflective jacket and hard hat on the right. If the throw is short and the man in the center of the picture leans in to catch it, he could easily fall to his death. The man in the dark jacket and pants and the gentleman walking toward the camera wearing a green jacket and hat aren't wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE). None of the four workers pictured here are wearing fall protection harnesses. Slip, trip and fall hazards abound on this disorganized website. A green
wheelbarrow sits at the left end of the improvised walkway, literally inviting workers to trip over it. Buckets, pieces of pipes and other debris litter paths where workers must walk, creating numerous trip hazards. The ground below isn't much better. It's littered with pieces of wood that could easily trip a worker who isn't watching what he is doing. At least two of the four workers are wearing some PPE - reflective vests and hard hats - but no eye protection, and it's hard to see if they're wearing steel-toed boots. All things considered, this job site downright scary from a safety standpoint! Interested in related products?
